A History Moment
The Quick Hustle That Founded Abbotsford
In 1889, John Cunningham Maclure — a Scottish surveyor and former Royal Engineer — acquired 160 acres of Fraser Valley bush along the Old Yale Road. The moment he saw the rich Matsqui Prairie, he declared it “the promised land.”
Just 68 days later, he transferred the land to his son. Two months after that, it was sold again. In under five months, the property had changed hands twice in one of British Columbia’s fastest early real estate flips.

John Cunningham Maclure
The final buyer, Robert Ward, filed the town plan in 1891. When it came time to name the settlement, Maclure suggested honoring his friend Henry “Harry” Abbott, a powerful Canadian Pacific Railway superintendent. In return, the CPR built a station, and the name Abbotsford was born (sometimes originally spelled Abbottsford).
There’s a lingering family legend that Maclure actually named it after Sir Walter Scott’s famous Abbotsford House in Scotland. The truth is likely a bit of both.
By 1892 a post office opened, the village was incorporated in 1924, and through later amalgamations (Matsqui in 1995), Abbotsford grew into one of B.C.’s largest and most dynamic cities.
It’s a perfect founding story for the Fraser Valley: big dreams, railway ambition, and a healthy dose of old-fashioned hustle.

You can Verify Used Items Before You Buy: How to Use CPIC
When buying used goods online—especially electronics, bicycles, or vehicles—it is essential to ensure you aren't inadvertently purchasing stolen property.
You can verify the status of an item instantly using cpic-cipc.ca.
Managed by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) offers a free, public-facing database to search serial numbers and verify if an item has been reported stolen anywhere in Canada.
What You Can Search
The portal allows daily searches across several major categories:
Vehicles: Cars, trucks, motorcycles, trailers, and ATVs (requires a VIN).
Bicycles & E-Bikes: Searchable by serial number or VIN.
Electronics & Property: Searchable by hardware serial numbers.
Other Gear: Includes boats, marine motors, and firearms.
Next Steps: If a search reveals an item is stolen, do not proceed with the purchase. Instead, note the listing details and report the information to your local police department.
